In honor of the only day of the year where we celebrate commercials by sitting through a long, boring football game to watch them (That is why we do it, right?), I thought it would be nice to take a look down Nostalgia Boulevard and look at some of the most memorable video game commercials, both good and bad. This Super Smash Bros. commercial is actually what I used to convince my father to buy this game for me when it came out. My father was generally clueless about video games, but loved oldies music, so whenever this commercial came on, I mentioned how I hoped that song would be in the game, and I eventually found the game waiting for me one day after school. Of course, that awesome Turtles song was not on the soundtrack, but I still am reminded of SSB whenever I hear it....

Of course, that awesome Turtles song was not on the soundtrack, but I still am reminded of SSB whenever I hear it.

This commercial for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, on the other hand, still makes me cringe while watching it. As a gigantic fan of Final Fantasy Tactics, I had been excited about this game, annoying people who would listen while I talked about it. When the commercial came on for the first time, I remember my sister turning to me, and asking "Is that the game you've been talking about? Geek.". Someday, I will forgive Square-Enix for this commercial. Maybe.

The only thing I have to say to this commercial for Legend of Zelda is "Go Link, wikky wikky!"

Okay, so I was already playing World of Warcraft when this commercial came out, doesn't mean it isn't still one of the funniest commercials made for a video game.

This commercial gives such an epic feel to Final Fantasy 7, although it did not hint to the copious amounts of text boxes. I also know that quite a few people were disappointed when they realized that Cloud and friends actually have boxes for hands. I know I was still overjoyed in the Christmas of 97 when my brothers and I opened our big present to find a Playstation and Final Fantasy 7 (And Pandemonium, which is still a fun, underrated game)

It is obvious in hindsight that Nintendo has been planning the Wii for some time now. While it may be slightly more fun to play Punch-Out! on the Wii rather that with the Power Glove, nobody can deny that, for the 90s, that kid was playing with power!

This commercial for Final Fantasy X-2 was my first serious introduction to J-Pop. I'm hoping that someday, with enough therapy, I will be able to get over this. Also, I realized while rewatching this that a disproportionate amount of my video game memories are linked to Square Enix, the evil geniuses.

This commercial for Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue always upset me when I was younger. Wouldn't being crushed in a bus hurt all of those Pokemon? It did not seem very humane, and I like to think that after trying to be crushed by that bus driver, Pikachu introduced that bus driver to Thunderbolt.

While this commercial for the Playstation 3 upsets me as an adult. Really, what the hell, Sony?

Now, I've never seen or heard of this game before today, but I couldn't help myself. That guy is just tasty. I'll play a fitness game with him any day of the week.

There were many who thought that this day wouldn't come. There have been entire websites dedicated to the fact that Duke Nukem Forever is perhaps the biggest joke of gaming history. The king of all vaporware, there were many (myself included) who believe that Duke Nukem forever would be relegated to something you joke about on April Fools Day when you can't think of anything better. Looks like we need a new joke, however, as 2k Games has announced a release date of May 3rd, 2011 for the United States, with the rest of the world following suit on May 6th, marking the end of 14 years of development on the title. It is a little staggering to think of how the world has changed in the time we've waited for Duke Nukem Forever. In the time since development began, for instance, the entire Harry Potter series was released. I've never been a fan of the Duke Nukem Games, but it will be interesting to see what was accomplished in that time. Also, I'm looking forward to silly Youtube videos of people busting out their yellowed Babbages preorder slips and trying to get some money back from them....

Square-Enix certainly knows how to appeal to their fanbase, don't they? Joystiq is reporting that Dissidia Duodecim Prologus Final Fantasy, the demo for Dissidia 012 [Duodecim] Final Fantasy. has a very special prize attached to it. Anyone who pays the ¥300 for a tasty snippet will be able to do what every gamer has wanted to do since 1997: bring Aeris back from the dead. She will not be a playable character, but rather an Assist character. The inclusion of Aeris almost makes up for the ridiculousness of the title given to the demo. Some other nice details emerged about the game, mainly the inclusion of two additional characters, fan favorite Gilgamesh, of Final Fantasy V fame, and Prishe, from Final Fantasy XI. Prishe is a character I'm exceptionally excited about. While not as memorable as Shantotto, who was featured in the first Dissidia, it is great to see SE give some fan service to the players of FFXI, whose consistency and dependability has been ignored as of late because of the antics of its annoying younger brother, FFXIV. No word yet on if this deal will be coming stateside, but I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that, if not the demo itself, there will be at least some way to get gamer's favorite flower girl in our copies of Dissidia....

Meet Bovidae. Bovidae had a fairly normal life in Mulgore (After all, happy Tauren come from Mulgore), but he never felt quite at home. While his brothers wanted to visit Thunder Bluff to take a gander at Aponi Brightmane, Bovidae was more interested in meeting Baine Bloodhoof, and seeing if his horns were really as large as everyone said they were. While he didn't exactly fit in, he still loved his home, his family, and (for the most part) his life. Then Deathwing came. In the short time it took Deathwing to shatter Azeroth, Bovidae's life was similarly destroyed. The quillboar were riled into a frenzy, and attacked Camp Narache in an unsuccessful bid to destroy the Taurens. Though they were pushed back, there were heavy casualties, including Bovidae's parents. With nothing to hold him to his home, he decided to make his own way in the world, and maybe find love on his journey. First, however, there were lots and lots of pigs to kill....

First, however, there were lots and lots of pigs to kill.

Bovidae is only the second new character I've created since the launch of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, and it is my first chance to actually experience the new quests and leveling experience which Blizzard worked so hard to revamp. The other character was a Worgen made mainly so I could say I had one of those adorable chihuahuas, and so that I could experience their starting area, which was gorgeous. Blizzard has said that they really wanted a player to feel part of a storyline with the new leveling experience, rather than just wandering from place to place, killing bears and boars. Right away when I started Bovidae, I noticed that while some of the quests were pretty basic (kill 10 boars, save your companions, destory the Bristleback leader) they flowed together much smoother than in old world WoW. For those of you who might not of leveled a character through Vanilla's starting areas, they were, in a word, disasters. The quests and their objectives were scattered, and you would be running halfway across a map to complete a quest, and then run back to the questgiver, only to find that the next quest it opens has you running to the exact same questing area. It was a pain and made some questing areas so tedious you'd do whatever you could to avoid time there (I'm looking at you, Barrens)

As I said, the questing here flowed extremely well, and I never felt I was retracing my steps needlessly. The quests felt as though I was being taken on a tour of Mulgore, rather than being tossed out into the middle of a world and being told to figure out where to go. The questing hubs led into each other perfectly, with the starting quests at Camp Narache finishing with a gorgeous fly over Mulgore as you are transformed into an astral bird. It was appropriately epic and it really helped to make you feel as a part of this world, rather than just a player in a game. I also must command Blizzard on being able to teach the mechanics of their game without obvious tutorials. One quest in particular, teaching players about flight points, was always present in the game, but Blizzard made the smart decision to move it up from a quest you'd normally get at around level 15, and one which was easily missable, to a quest you get right at the start of your second questing hub, so new players know right away to make sure to get flight points (also, it gives them a taste of the cities, which I like. I know when I started playing, I didn't really understand how many people played this game until I walked into Stormwind).

I must say, I'm more excited to play on this baby Paladin than any other character I've taken up in WoW. I think Blizzard has really perfected the questing experience in Cataclysm, if the 80-85 content is any indication of the work they put into the rest of the zones. I do not, however, know the current leveling path, or what zones have must see content. Next week Bovidae will finish up in Mulgore, and then head to the Barrens. After that, however, I have no plans, so I turn to you, dear readers. Where would you like to see Bovidae's adventures take him? Any particular zone that should not be missed? Any Gnomes I just have to punt? Let me know in the comments. And if you'd like to send your regards to Bovidae, you may find him on Wyrmrest Accord (US). He is most active on Sundays, but you may be able to find him other times.

Back in November, we reported that the extremely popular Angry Birds is to be ported to pretty much every console available. The lovable birds have not stopped there, however. Displayed at CES is Angry Birds Knock On Wood. Created by Mattel, this game will have you and up to three of your friends take turns building pig-protecting structures and then lobbing adorable plastic birds to bring the entire thing crashing down. With a projected price of $14.99 and a scheduled release of May 2011, I know I'm looking forward to getting this for my nieces, who grab my phone every time I visit them so they can play Angry Birds (or at least, that will be what I tell others when I buy this game for myself!).
The trashmaster (nouvelle version nouvelle voix-off !)Uploaded by murakawa. - Watch game reviews, trailers, and walkthrough videos. An enterprising French filmmaker, Mathieu Weschler has a stunning accomplishment on his hands. He has, over the course of two years, created The Trashmaster, a feature length film using the Grand Theft Auto IV engine. In his own words: Created entirely with images from the video game Grand Theft Auto IV, this stylistic feat makes all former attempts to turn machinimas into a fully-fledged genre look like child's play. The "trashmaster" divides his time between collecting garbage and cleaning up other forms of trash fouling up New York City's streets: dealers, small-time criminals, rapists... When the dancers in his favourite strip club are mysteriously killed, the trashmaster finds himself hot on the trail of a particularly twisted serial killer. I thought that The Trashmaster was extremely well made. Its voice acting is sparse, but convincing, and it makes excellent use of music and sound effects, not to mention a great use of Grand Theft Auto IV . There is brief nudity and strong language, not to mention violence (everything we've come to expect and love from Grand Theft Auto) so it may not be the best way to spend time at work, but it is something you should definitely take the time to sit down and watch! I wonder though, would Roger Ebert consider this art? Full Feature-Length Film Created with GTAIV: "The Trashmaster" [Rockstar]...
