New Final Fantasy XIII Teaser Website Appears, Bluntly Tells You What's Up

Well, Final Fantasy XIII escalated quickly. Despite the amazing divisive powers of the latest two entries in the Final Fantasy franchise, a new chapter in the "Lightning Saga" promises to continue the story (and certainly convolute it even further). Earlier today, a teaser website went up announcing that "A Storm Gathers." Okay, it's not so much of a teaser as it is an announcement of an announcement. It bluntly tells you that they've got some stuff brewing and can't wait to boil it over our internets. From the website: FINAL FANTASY XIII TEAM TO PRESENT NEW DIRECTION FOR THE SAGA OF KEY CHARACTER, LIGHTNING The "Lightning Saga" that started with the release of FINAL FANTASY XIII, has achieved a cumulative shipment of over 9.6 million units; and in May 2012 FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 was brought to conclusion with the add-on content entitled "Lightning's Story: Requiem of the Goddess". Key members of the FINAL FANTASY XIII development team including the Producer, Director and Art Director, are in preparations to present new information about the direction of Lightning's story. This presentation will take place at an event in Tokyo to celebrate FINAL FANTASY 25th Anniversary, on 1st September 2012. So, yeah, Final Fantasy XIII-3. While it would be the biggest turn around and punch in the throat for this to actually be the announcement that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is finally coming out, that seems about as likely as a current generation FF7 remake. Plus, one of those storm clouds kind of looks like Lightning raising her sword to attack some behemoth cloud creature and that can't be a coincidence. What do you think? Study those storm clouds and let me know in the comments....

Meanwhile, in outer space, Isaac Clark has discovered a a terrible, frozen planet that might hold the secret to preventing any more necromorph outbreaks. Naturally, that means necromorphs are literally hiding in every bloodstained nook and cranny he passes through. Pay careful attention in this trailer and you can see a few gruesome executions both for and from the unfortunate protagonist. (Divert your eyes, children.)

And finally, mostly because more than three trailers in a single post seems like disgusting overkill, we come to Naughty Dog's The Last of Us. The mushy, smiles and laughter at the most dire of times kind of humanity, I mean. Thankfully, so do cassette players.

Borderlands 2, Casual Sexism, And Girlfriend Mode -- A Drama

By now, dear readers, you have probably heard about the Eurogamer interview yesterday with Gearbox about Borderlands 2 and what happened with their lead designer, John Hemingway. If you haven't, well, it got a bit sexist. Literally, just a bit. A single implication turned the internet into another storm of controversy concerning the role of women in gaming. When talking about the Mecromancer, a DLC class to be added to the game after release, Hemingway described a skill tree called Best Friends Forever, which uses an array of abilities such as ricocheting bullets to help players that "suck." It's supposed to help newbies get a grasp on the mechanics of first person shooters and bring them into the genre, which can, admittedly, be daunting to the uninitiated. Unfortunately, he described it as "Girlfriend Mode." It didn't go over well. "The design team was looking at the concept art and thought, you know what, this is actually the cutest character we've ever had. I want to make, for the lack of a better term, the girlfriend skill tree. This is, I love Borderlands and I want to share it with someone, but they suck at first-person shooters. Can we make a skill tree that actually allows them to understand the game and to play the game? That's what our attempt with the Best Friends Forever skill tree is." Normally, such a slight and casual example of sexism would not be enough to set off my prejudice alarms, and this was no exception. I was much more interested in a major FPS release going the extra mile to make their game more casual-player accessible without sacrificing difficulty (though, it is via DLC, so it's not that much more accessible). But that's just me, and writers much more diligent and talented than I raised their digital pens and said, "Hey, not cool." Gearbox has done some apologizing and the drama has essentially subsided. The beauty of it, however, has yet to be fully realized. It's not okay to be sexist in video games anymore. We all know that. The fallout from the Tomb Raider and Hitman trailers this summer proved that large, blunt depictions of tired sexist tropes and threats of rape do not sit right with this community. And today we saw that small, offhand remarks are not okay either. The comment was probably relatively innocent and few people really think John Hemingway is a secret misogynist trying to bring down the status of women. It was just an easy way to get his point across, right?. But that's the point of this internet drama. Even tiny comments do bring others down and reinforce outdated stereotypes. They have an annoying tendency to push into people's subconsciousness and covertly spread prejudice. Basically, it wouldn't have made any sense calling a gameplay style designed for people that suck "Girlfriend Mode" if we didn't already think on some level that girlfriends suck at games. Of course, today's "Girlfriend Mode" was a relatively small incident and no one expects misogynists to suddenly question their morals and decide to change before going to sleep tonight. No one's calling for any resignations or anything absurd like that. A small crime deserves a small punishment, and I certainly think Mr. Hemingway and Gearbox have had theirs. But if we can keep the dialogue open and continue root out these easy-to-miss incidents, real change is possible....

Legendary Pokemon Coming To A Store Near You

Every now and then, Nintendo likes to lay Pokemon on thick to make sure we all get addicted again. It's a strategy that works marvelously. With Pokemon Black and White 2 just around the corner, the Big N is following tradition and giving away a free legendary right before the new game's release. WHO'S THAT POKEMON!? Spoilers: It's Keldeo. US trainers with copies of Pokemon Black and White can snag this mythical monster at their nearest participating Gamestop starting August 27. The event continues until October 6, the day right before the release of Pokemon Black and White 2. UK players can likewise snag the beast from participating GAME and Gamestation stores between September 1 and October 11. Keldeo is a water/fighting type and the fourth leg of the "musketeer quartet," a group of monsters including Cobalion, Virizion, and Terrakion that draw inspiration from Alexander Dumas' The Three Musketeers. This Keldeo comes at level 15, holding a PP Max, and knowing the moves Aqua Jet, Leer, Double Kick, and Bubblebeam. Oh, and do I have to mention that this is the only way you can get your hands on a legitimate (read: no cheating required) Keldeo or does everyone already understand that? Well, just in case, I'll say it again -- events are the only way to get a Keldeo. So if you really want to be the coolest kid on the block and finish that Pokedex, you'll need to make the pilgrimage at the end of the month and pick one up for yourself.
The Diablo 3 saga continues with another set of highs and lows for Blizzard's sparkling new action RPG. First the bad news. After numerous players came forward in Blizzard's forums claiming missing items and hacked accounts, Blizzard countered yesterday that they have yet to deal with a case of hacking into a battle.net account with an attached authenticator. No outside IPs have linked back to vulnerable accounts, only addresses associated with the login. That's right, as far as they can see right now, people are being scammed through "traditional means." This is 2012, people. By this point, the internet is almost able to drink legally in the US. We should know by now that unique passwords and any available extra security measures, like Blizzard's random number generating authenticator, are essential for online games. It might not always keep you secure, but it will definitely help. But on the bright side for Blizzard, Diablo 3 has eviscerated sales records with an estimated 3.5 million copies sold within the first 24 hours of launch. Add in the 1.2 million people playing copies that came free with the World of Warcraft Annual Pass, and all the sales since then, and it comes out to around 6.7 million games. "We're definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo 3 and jump in the moment it went live," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We recognize that setting a new launch record is a big achievement," Morhaime continued. "However, we're especially proud of the gameplay feedback we've received from players worldwide. We're pleased that Diablo 3 has lived up to players' high expectations, and we're looking forward to welcoming more players into Sanctuary in the days ahead." And that doesn't even take into account the Korean Internet game rooms where Diablo 3 has earned an estimated 39% of play. Ignore the subtle stereotype that official stat implies about Korean lifestyles and sit in awe at Bizzard's power. Of course, the state we're all really wondering about is how many left clicks 6.3 million games can generate. I'm guessing trillions....

Civilization 5 will turn the tide of war and win back your time this spring with the release of the Gods and Kings expansion. Focusing on adding a few major game aspects, this expansion promises the return of fan favorite features religion and espionage, missing from the basic version of the world domination simulator, as well as tweaks to combat and diplomacy. Religions allow players to found and grow the faith of their people from the very beginning, offering a much richer experience than religion in Civ 4. Now, religions can be customized to fit particular playstyles, such as aiding culture or war development, pulling different beliefs from a common pool shared among all players. Once an empire's faith adopts a practice, it disappears from the available options for other players, creating a new avenue for resource competition. Religions grow in a variety of ways depending on your civilization and belief choices, such as the Celts gaining extra faith for living near wooded areas. Eventually, your faith can blossom into pantheon of gods or even see a prophet arrive to bring the true word and upgrade to major religion status, allowing further customization and development to suit your playstyle. To hear about the more secular additions Gods and Kings brings to Civilization 5, as well as a few more nifty images, make the jump....

Late game, specifically at the Renaissance and beyond, espionage returns to let players manipulate foreign nations through the careful placement of spies. This system has been refined significantly from Civ 4, now being confined to a single status screen for easy manipulation of spies. Gone are the days of dragging your agents around the world manually - now, assignments let you distribute your forces quickly and quietly.

Your agents provide numerous behind the scenes benefits, like gathering information about what other nations are planning, giving actual insight into what the computer is running behind the scenes. They can also rig elections in city-states to install officials that like you or stage coups to try and takeover by force.

Speaking of city-states, Gods and Kings introduces two new varieties - mercantile states that can provide unique luxuries and religious states to bolster faith for their allies. Thankfully, the city-state system has also received some much needed attention. Previously, city-states would create alliances based on monetary investments, essentially letting players buy their way into powerful positions during elections.

All of that disappears with the Gods and Kings expansion. Now, these independent states will set tasks, affectionately called "quests" by the game, which determine what nations earn their favor. They cover nearly every aspect of play, from technological advancements to bringing faith to godless regions, adding a new layer of complexity demanding a leader's attention.

That is unless you want to smash your way to victory. The combat system has been slowed down noticeably, which lets conflicts grow from simple hack and burn conflicts to full on battles with dynamic battle lines and an actual feeling of war. Other tweaks include a few new ranged units to help keep pace with melee fighters and new melee naval units, like the WWI destroyer, to add more danger to coastal areas.

And, of course, the expansion comes with tons of new pieces to fill the world. 9 new civilizations will be available, including the Celts, Maya, Byzantines, Netherlands, and Carthage, each with the appropriate historical leader such as William I, Prince of Orange for the Netherlands and Boudicca of the Celts, each also speaking the appropriate language of their people in scenes.

Civilization 5: Gods and Kings hits stores this spring. Until then, pass the time looking over these screen shots and plan your next world domination.

Mass Effect 3 Really Needs A Few Gay Space Marines

With Mass Effect 3 landing in stores tomorrow, we'll soon get the answers to all of our burning questions. How can we drive off the reapers, whom have already won this battle and cleansed the universe countless times before? By implicitly gay, I mean a character or characters that can only be romanced by a Shepard of the same sex.
With Mass Effect 3 landing in stores tomorrow, we'll soon get the answers to all of our burning questions. How can we drive off the reapers, whom have already won this battle and cleansed the universe countless times before? Why would anyone stand in Commander Shepard's way when the galaxy hangs in the balance?

And will we finally get implicitly gay romance options?

By implicitly gay, I mean a character or characters that can only be romanced by a Shepard of the same sex. Not bisexual characters, not monosexed aliens that don't have gender concepts, not this "in your story, they can be gay" stuff, but characters that are always gay whether you pursue them or not. It's the next logical step for Bioware.

Sure, female Shepard's had the chance to dance around with Kelly Chambers, and everyone can get freaky with the various Asari squadmates between Mass Effect 1 and 2, but never has Bioware's space opera given gay gamers much of a nod.

Despite what little options already exist, the second game requires a heterosexual romance to unlock the Paramour achievement. Even more insulting, the original Mass Effect was slated to have homosexual options for Ashley and Kaiden, but they were removed during production. The voices for the conversations still hide on the disk, though, waiting for steamy scenes that will never come.

But maybe Mass Effect 3 can make up for all that. After executive producer Casey Hudson tweeted last May that the game would "support wider for love interests, including same-sex options for male and female characters," fans have argued about continuity issues and fairness across the internet.

The argument 's core lies around the idea of personal authorship, the fact that certain key parts of the story are filled in by the player through their actions, and how new gay options could affect people's previous character ideas. Some even claimed that allowing these romances would cheapen the narrative experience.

Well, excuse me, but as one of many gay gamers who wish Garrus would look our way once in a while, I have to call bullcrap. There already exist plenty of limitations in the story; straight gamers just don't have to deal with a lot of it.

Out of the 12 romances so far in the Mass Effect series, eight are always heterosexual encounters. Nothing can change that, no matter how much your male Shepard likes Kaiden or your FemShep wants to dig beneath Tali's environmental suit. Yet, those choices don't "cheapen" the narrative or limit the player significantly in most people's eyes.

Implicit sexualities are already part of Bioware's fictions, even in the lauded Dragon Age 2 (remember, Sebastian only has eyes for the ladies). So adding a teammate or two that only wants to get down with the Commander at the end of the rainbow wouldn't upheave or even alter the existing systems, but rather add a touch of realistic equality.

Yes, realistic. It makes zero sense that everyone the commander gets to know would want to sex him/her across the stars. Romance has more sides than just flirting, true love, and harem fantasies - there is also unrequited passion and outright rejection, which blocking off some romance options can create.

"But this is a fantasy game, not a dating simulator. People don't want to be rejected." Yeah, and people don't want rejection in real life, either, but it still happens. Loss, in war or love, can serve as a way to make the eventual victory sweeter and actually mean something because you had to work for it.

Guarantees are boring. Maybe your Shepard will always hold a candle for that girl he could never quite get or has to deal with a flirtatious sqaudmate that likes to tease. Offering true homosexual pairing options can open up the possibilities for everyone's games and make a fuller, more appreciably realistic experience.

Bioware has consistently been a big player for gay representation in games over the last decade, being inclusive in virtually every title since Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. They have even stood up to the bigots among their fans and said that romances are "for everyone." Let's hope that tomorrow's end to the Mass Effect trilogy will be no different.

Last weekend's big reveal for Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2 shocked gamers across the world by bucking the series' traditional remix trend. Virtually all of the details remain cloudy (no doubt lined up for a drip feed to keep fans in a constant state of arousal), but today, Nintendo of America has announced that the new games will reach North America and Europe in Autumn 2012 for the Nintendo DS. A fall release adds to the pile of "Reasons Generation Five Might Actually Be Different" alongside eschewing the yearly spring dates the series has used since Diamond and Pearl, the more in-depth story present in Black and White, and the loss of a third "remix" title for each generation. It seems like Nintendo and Game Freak will keep their promise to revitalize the series and make some drastic changes to an exhausted formula. We'll be sure to keep you updated on the details on Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2 as they arrive out this year....

For Pokemon fans, tonight will be a sleepless night rivaled only by Christmas Eve and the euphoria after catching a shiny Jigglypuff. Game Freak director Junichi Masuda has announced via the Game Freak blog that he will be revealing something on the Japanese show, Pokemon Smash, this Sunday. On this coming Sunday, Februrary 26, 2012, from 7:30 A.M, I, Masuda, will be appearing on TV TOKYO's Show, "Pokémon Smash!" I will be making a VERY important announcement, so be sure not to miss it!! Watch it live on TV! And, for those of you who can't watch television on live, I will announce the same information right after the show via twitter!! While the Pokemon franchise has piles of spinoffs and rereleases that could fill the spot, it seems most likely that Masuda will announce the third fifth generation game, presumably titled Pokemon Grey, to keep the streak of spring main series releases. Of course, it could also be information on the Pokemon/Nobunaga's Ambition or perhaps a follow-up to Pokemon: Battle Revolution to include fifth generation monsters, but that seems more unlikely. Regardless, you can follow the twitter link to hear the news straight from Masuda himself this weekend or just wait for the inevitable wave of news stories sure to flood the internet. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to tend to my shiny Jigglypuff....

The video lands on the tenth anniversary of Jet Set Radio Future and blurts out an enigmatic "guess who's back" before dashing away. So, yeah, we're all going to get a chance to play the fantastic Jet Set Radio again. For anyone who missed the skate punk game the first time it came around, Jet Set Radio stars a cast of runaway teenagers fighting against a culture of oppression and conformity. Collectively known as the "rudies," they form into gangs across Tokyo and spray paint their tags while fleeing the aggressive police under the control of Captain Onishima. And of course, the soundtrack comes courtesy of pirate radio DJ, Professor K. Responsible for the wave of cel-shading that engulfed video games back in the early 00s, Jet Set Radio was criminally ignored in 2000.
