GayGamer Forum Turns One Year Old

A year ago today I added a forum to the site. Since that time we have racked up around 40,000 posts in about 2,400 topics from a member base of almost 2,000 people. While this represents only a small portion of our reader base, we have seen a surge of new forum members this week since we have recovered from the attack that brought us down last weekend. It's been really great to have so many new voices join the mix. For those of you who haven't noticed the link the to forum or who have just been lurking, we invite you to sign up and join any number of conversations. Although I am biased, I find it to be a very welcoming and safe environment. I hope you will too. Lastly, before I forget, keep an eye out for forum and other site improvements to be rolled out soon.

Weekend Warriors

DDoS AttackAs you might imagine, the last few days have been rather stressful. First we were blocking the IP addresses of a rather feeble DoS. Then the hate speech started appearing all over our forums. All of this was annoying but we were handling it. However, then our hosting company stepped in to do whatever it is they had to do, and that was the reason for such a long outage. I am looking for alternatives to avoid such problems in the future. Anyone out there have rack space available for your friendly neighborhood gay gamer?

It has been suggested that all of this was a PR stunt. While that is an affront to all the turmoil we've been going through this weekend to recover the site, I must admit that all the attention suddenly turning it our direction and the overwhelming show of support by so many is richly rewarding and rather ironic considering that it was a homophobic stunt that precipitated these events. So, I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome any newcomers who have become aware of our existence due to our misfortune. We hope you will choose to stick around.

Exclusive New Rockstar Franchise On PS3

Rockstar GamesMichael Shorrock, the Director of 3rd Party Relations at SCEA, has announced on PlayStation.Blog that Rockstar Games has signed a deal to create a entire new gaming franchise exclusively for the PS3.

Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that.. This is really a win-win situation for both companies.
Little to nothing is publicly known about the genre except that
this franchise is not LA Noire, but something all new.
Of course all the boys here in the Gay Gamer Castle are a twitter with the possibility of more in-game boy on boy action.

In-Game Ads

In-Game AdAlthough I'm sure this will hardly come as a shock to any of you, it would seem that with the rising costs of game development, we're on the verge of being further inundated with virtual ads. Now I'm not sure how such ads would fit outside game environments set in the current day, recent past or near future, but there are enough FPSs and MMOs out there that fall within this range to make it a lucrative market. Second Life anyone? I also wonder on the impact this could have on the independent developer. While a home brew game might not be able to pull off the high ad rates promised to a major manufacturer, could it provide an alternate revenue stream to help keep interesting independent games coming our way? In-game advertising leader Double Fusion predicts revenues of up to $1.5 billion in less than four years. I have mixed feelings about this. In some ways, it does allow for games to be more realistic. Walking by a Coke vending machine in the right scenario is more believable than a generic cola vending machine. On the other hand, everything everywhere seems to be becoming branded. It's like capitalism run a muck. At least I can rest assured that there will always be game realms where ads for real products just don't fit, and I won't have to be faced with them in order to relax and have fun gaming.

Early iPhone Impressions

iphone.jpgSo I had to sneak into the GayGamer castle, run to my room and bolt the door this evening. If the other boys knew I'd brought home an iPhone they would be trying to break down the door. Even though it is sure to feel like sleeping on a bed of rocks, I'll have to hide it under a stack of ninety nine mattresses when I go to sleep tonight. Alright then, enough about the castle drama and on with the story.

After running an errand today, I found myself in the vicinity of an Apple store. I figured it might be a long shot, but I decided to stop by and at least look at how long the line was. I got there around 3:00 PM with three hours until the launch, and I was number 113 in line. They were giving away free bottles of water, free ice cream, free pizza, and free coffee. As you might imagine, it was a jovial atmosphere. Unlike waiting in line for my Wii, this crowd spanned all ages and demographics. Make the jump for the rest of the review.

Original Paper Mario On Virtual Console

pmarioguide.jpgAccording to the latest issue of Nintendo Power, you will now be able to play all three versions of Paper Mario on the Wii. A long time favorite of RPG fans, the Nintendo 64 version of Paper Mario is scheduled to appear on the Wii virtual console. We haven't seen many Nintendo 64 titles on the virtual console. Hopefully this is a sign of more to come.

The Wii Is Not For Pr0n!

Wii.jpgWhen Nintendo first released the trial Internet Channel, I was excited. It was fun to read the latest GayGamer news on my TV, but the toolbar at the bottom took up a lot of screen real estate. YouTube videos didn't work for me either, neither did pop-up windows. It was beta software so all of that was okay, but I didn't find myself using it much because of the bugs. However, today all of that changes. New and improved features:

  • Zoom – The Internet Channel features two types of zoom: manual and automatic. The automatic zoom was first introduced in the trial version and allows users to select a point with the Wii Remote and zoom into that point at an auto-detected level. Manual zoom now gives the user the option to zoom the entire page at self-determined intervals.

  • Scroll – To help users understand their scrolling motions, a new scrolling display guide has been added to the Internet Channel that indicates the direction and speed of the scroll. In addition to scrolling by pressing the B Button, users can also use the +Control Pad, enabling four-directional scrolling. This allows users to scroll the screen without having to point the Wii Remote at the TV.

  • Search – A Search button has been added to the Start Page and to the browser toolbar. Users are given the choice of Yahoo! and Google search engines. The selection can be changed at any time.

  • Multiple Cursors – The Internet Channel now displays the cursors of multiple Wii Remotes. Only the first Wii Remote can select an item, while the other Wii Remotes can point out interesting content on the screen.

  • Hide the Toolbar – Users are now given the option to display or hide the Toolbar in the settings menu.

  • Response Time – The Internet Channel now sports improved performance and response time upon start-up when loading the Favorites list.

Make the jump for the full press release.
