As California, and the remainder of the United States, finds itself embroiled in a divisive discovery of gay marriage rights, it's a shame to see similar things perpetuated into developing online worlds. As you may, or may not know, Home has finally entered into it's 1.0 stage, and prior to it's launch into open beta status, new entitlements have been advanced. Most notably, users are now able to create private, "Clubs," for up to 32 members. But unfortunately, Sony shares the unnecessary protection cycle with the word "gay" that Blizzard also initially rationalized with World of Warcraft. Microsoft has also been guilty of this time and again with Xbox Gamertags and taglines. Upon downloading and firing up Home 1.0, I immediately set forth to develop the groundwork for a GayGamer.net club, and I was subsequently denied. The direct message I received through the system was, "Message contains disallowed words." Perhaps this is fortunate, considering that Home is still in a closed beta status. Perhaps Sony will quickly remedy this situation. But, there are other questions that arise. Why would they do such a thing? Had their staff not observed the similar arguments within World of Warcraft? Isn't Home developed by SCEE? Did they really think that blacklisting a word from a group that directly identifies with the word would disallow an antagonistic group from focusing on anti-gay rhetoric? I can easily create a Focus on the Family club. This takes a matter of seconds. I can also readily create an Equality California club. The basal argument that I've seen within the Home forums is that any and all usage of the word, "Gay," is readily equivalent to the, "N-word." I don't see this as such. There is no middle ground between the negative, "Gay," and the positive, "Gay." If there were, then I should expect a plethora of comedians to bandy it about in a positive, colorful manner. I have yet to see a pasty, white kid with fashionable clothing identifying as, "Gay-light." This is just another moment in my life where I can only hope for a comedian of Richard Pryor's stature to revoke a word once used only in obvious hate as a word used toward group identity. Let us protect ourselves, Sony--Much as we've done for the past century. Your word filter does little other than to deny us the ability to unite together against the daily struggles that we already, understandably live with. There's still time before Home launches into an open beta state. Sure, it may be within the next month, but I can only hope that Sony figures out that their investment in Life With PlayStation as an eventual obliteration to cancer can be equated to observing homosexuality as something other than permissibly negative. It takes a lifetime to become fully functional with our identities in real life, so why would you so readily deny us the ability to live freely in our virtual ones? In the meantime, Home remains awash in pseudo-transsexuals and hyper-masculine teens. I hope you're ready....

As one of the crown jewels in Nintendo's E3 2008 lineup, Animal Crossing: City Folk continues to impress as more of the game's features are laid out. What follows are some of the major points revealed during Nintendo's Developers Roundtable question and answer session. - Halloween is returning from the original Gamecube release, as is the Jingle character for the winter holiday season. - WiiConnect 24 will feed players new items and surprises. - New to 'City Folk is a city theater that puts on comedy skits. - You can visit your friend's city without them needing to be there. - The Able Sisters will now allow you to decorate the front, back, and sleeves of your shirts. - 'City Folk interacts with the Photo Channel so that you can send pictures to your friends or save them to a SD card. - If you have a friend that leaves the town, the connection will disappear for everyone...just like Wild World - Animal Crossing: Wild World fans can transport their character to City Folk, and gamers can also transport their collections. All this requires is a visit to Tom Nook in the Wii version.

- If you have a friend that leaves the town, the connection will disappear for everyone...just like Wild World
- Animal Crossing: Wild World fans can transport their character to City Folk, and gamers can also transport their collections. All this requires is a visit to Tom Nook in the Wii version. (!!!YES!!!)
- Players without WiFi can take their City Folk character data with them on their Nintendo DS to visit a friend's town.
- Brand new (i.e. not hidden on the disc) downloadable content is being developed for the game.
- Bummer, classic Nintendo games will not be returning.
- City Folk will not interact with the Wii Forecast Channel, as has been speculated.
- Gamers within the southern hemisphere will see their seasons inverted from gamers in the northern hemisphere.

The shift of Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII to being a multi-platform release for the west came as a shock to many a fanboy. As one of Sony's constant pillars for wooing prospective buyers, the loss of exclusivity doesn't just sting--it hurts badly. During a roundtable question and answer session today, Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO Jack Tretton responded sharply when asked if he was disappointed in Square Enix's move: "I guess disappointed is clearly an appropriate term." "I think Microsoft has spent the majority of their money on trying to curry favor with third parties. I think it's going to be harder and harder to have third-party exclusives as we move forward." Whether the multi-platform move was a choice founded on the hope of garnering higher sales, or if the shift was driven explicitly by Microsoft waving suitcases full of cashola, will only be known to those present within closed boardroom sessions. Then again, Sony's been in this business for well over a decade now. You would think that they would have learned long ago the direct response money brings....

The 80GB model of the PlayStation 3 has become synonymous as a final avenue for gamers to find their oft desired backwards compatibility. So, imagine the immediate joy, and the ensuing horror, in finding that the 80GB PlayStation 3 would be arriving in September as part of a new "Core Pack" at the pleasing price of $399. Be warned, this is not the 80GB PlayStation 3 that you know and love--Oh no. This rogue SKU is the presently scorned 40GB model harboring an 80GB hard drive. What will become of the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 backwards compatibility equipped PlayStation 3? Will is Sony so content to maintain backwards compatibility as a premium that one must search for? How does the extra 40 gigabytes strike you? Will you now be rationalizing a PS3 purchase, or will you instead wait to find out if Sony will provide a new SKU for a system featuring backwards compatibility? With Konami strutting onto the scene and catting Harmonix into a fight, it only seems suitable for Harmonix to, at the very least, acknowledge the existence of the tiff.

"Konami's actions are extremely surprising. Unfortunately, successful products such as Rock Band can often become targets for baseless litigation," said a company spokesperson today.

"We have substantial defenses to this claim and intend to vigorously defend it."

Good for you, Harmonix! Don't let the good ship Rock Band go down without an adequate, and publicly dramatic, fight.

For some reason, I was hoping that Harmonix's upcoming Rock Band 2 was going to be bigger than the rat race for the most razor blades. Well, as you can see from the above photos, I stand corrected. Though the standard drum kit to be sold with Rock Band 2 mimics the original, underneath the surface it features less noisy drum pads and velocity sensors to better gauge your wild flailing. Eventually, when you tire of the meager four panel drums and bass, you can upgrade to three additional cymbals for the full effect. Don't worry, the entire setup will be sold as a premium kit for your hard earned money. Prices have yet to be announced, but E3 may shed more light on your next costly investment.
Who would have thought that the marriage of Metal Gear Solid and Lupin III could be so mindblowingly brilliant? That is the long running Lupin III opening, for the uninitiated. I'm not sure which I am more inspired to entertain again. Should I pop Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes into the Gamecube so as to re-establish all of those far gone memories of the original Metal Gear Solid? To play the PlayStation release would be a little too painful--Those graphics have not aged well at all. Or, should I start the slow trek through the first few seasons of Lupin III? Perhaps I could combine the experience with an old Pizzicato 5 record and Metal Gear Saga Vol. 1 in the DVD player. Hmm... Solid Snake the Third is a Total Badass [Topless Robot]...
