Sunset Overdrive keeps on making me happy. This colorful, irreverent approach to shooters was one of very few things keeping me from falling asleep during this year’s E3 press conferences. Following E3, and the massive backlash Ubisoft saw for not including a playable female assassin in Assassin’s Creed Unity, developer Insomniac Games threw a bit of shade Ubisoft’s way by showcasing the ability to make one in this game. Today in the newest episode of Sunset TV, where Brandon Winfrey shares updates on the highly anticipated title, it was announced that characters can switch between genders at any time during the game.

While answering a question about the ability to modify a character’s appearance after their initial creation it was said that,

“You can change any part of your appearance at any time. So that means body type, skin tone, anything. So if you wanna be a girl one day, do it, and you can switch back to a guy the next.”

Was Mario Kart 8 not quite weird enough for you? Were there little tweaks you wish were made to the gameplay? Well, you might be interested in an update that’s scheduled for Wednesday, August 27 that will include some new vehicles and gameplay features. (Not coincidentally, that date is also the 22nd anniversary of the original Super Mario Kart, which has just been conveniently released for download in the eShop for $7.99.)

At this year’s Game Developers Conference, long-time editor and localization specialist Michelle Clough gave a talk about male sexuality in video games. Having covered a few of the same points on gaming’s sexual double standard and the oddities of Cho Ainiki myself (albeit far less eloquently), I wanted to explore the topic with Michelle a bit more from her perspective. I recently reached out to her about bishonen men, fan service, and how games can better depict romance and sex outside of just the squishy bits.

Readers be warned, we are of off the normal waters explored in Gay Gamer in these parts. Here, there be fan-girls.

Hyrule Warriors Welomes Zant, Ghirahim, and Ganondorf

Last night Nintendo aired a special Hyrule Warriors-centric Direct where the game’s creators broke down the details of the game. Much of what they discussed expanded on previously announced features and characters, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. Chain Chomp weapons, giant Bomb-Chus, and strategic Cuckoo swarms were all shown off alongside previously announced stages and characters from Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword, and Twilight Princess.

We also got a new mode that harkens back to the original Legend of Zelda game. Players find themselves on an 8-bit map full of unlockable weapons and items, with each individual block-area housing its own unique challenge for players to overcome. Upon selecting a challenge players are transported to the fully-realized 3D map to complete their challenge. This Adventure Mode, along with two player co-op multiplayer, will give the game plenty of replay value once the main campaign is complete.

Lastly it was revealed that series villains Zant, Ghirahim, and Ganondorf will all be unlockable playable characters. This certainly balances the game’s gender scales somewhat, though the playable cast is still predominantly fiercely fabulous females.
