My pick this week is actually a manga this time, so don't fret, my fellow otaku. Have a fascination with the mafia? Like me, are you feeling blue now that The Sopranos is over? Reborn might just be your panacea. Tsuna Sawada, your everyday Japanese student underachiever in all respects, finds himself chosen to be the next mafia lord of the Vongola family, and by a baby assassin named Reborn no less. This is the story of his training for the exalted position, and the crazy folks that populate his life.

Akira Amano started Reborn just a couple years ago, and it's come a long way since it's inception. Upon first glance, Reborn! is just another of those boring and stereotypical "school hijinks" manga, with characters that change shape under certain circumstances. And it very much DOES contain those elements. But Reborn!'s fun, great character design, unique style and quality is what makes it rise to the top, helping it to become one of the top five most liked manga in Japan in recent polls. With a popular new anime currently airing and a video game just released a few days ago, Reborn!'s popularity is just starting.

Called Katei Kyōshi Hittoman Reborn! in Japan, the english translation by VIZ has been dubbed just plain ole Reborn! despite the fact that that very clearly describes what the baby Reborn is: a Home Tutor Hitman. He's an expert with weapons, especially guns, and he has a special ability of infusing his victims with "Deathperation," an ability that brings special powers briefly to the forefront after having been shot. This enables the otherwise cowardly Tsuna to perform amazing feats that continually impress his peers as he slowly learns how to protect his family and what it means to be a mafia lord.

There's a lot of playing around in this series, with pretty solid humor and tons of sight gags. The tiny little baby Reborn (who is just as twisted as he is cute) is obviously a hit with the ladies, and in one instance, is stalked by an ex lover that specializes in poisonous cooking. Tsuna obviously becomes a target by the crazed girl and spend the next few chapters avoiding evilly gaseous cakes and snacks. Tsuna is constantly running for his life while his friends engage in one crazy time after the next, and it's humorous seeing him scramble around while everyone else seems calm.

Amano has a good sense of attractiveness, because almost all of his characters are surprisingly sexy in their own way, especially among the male characters. One of my favorites is boxing champ Ryohei Sasagawa, whose gray hair and nose bandage complements his passionate fighting style and is fortunately often shirtless. So if you read manga for crush factor, Reborn! has a lot to offer.

Reborn is pretty much a gag comic for much of it's early chapters, so if you want a more serious manga, it might not be for you. Things do get more serious as time goes on, and when the fights start to get more intense, Amano's drawing style really improves from the early chapters. I myself was a little turned off by Reborn!'s goofiness, but have found a lot to like by sticking with it.

Give it a chance, because who can get sick of teenage kids getting shot for superpowers ??

No Online For Guitar Hero III?

Well, if you plan to get it on Wii anyway. While plenty of online-happy gameplay is planned for the PS3 and 360 versions of the game, unsurprising problems have arisen on the Nintendo front with no time frame given on a resolution. Red Octane President Kai Huang confirmed recently this by saying, "There won't be online initially for the Wii, but we are working with Nintendo to see how we can get those features in." This is where Nintendo really needs to get their crap in order. Online capability is pretty quickly becoming an industry standard for most games, especially the ones where any sort of competition is potential. I understand Nintendo's fears in covering for any abuses of this (especially on the DS, which I can't really go outside without seeing some little kid with one mashed into their face) but I find it very hard to believe that the Wii has such a significantly younger fan base than any other console that it needs all these protective hurdles. The Wii's online options flounder in comparison to the capabilities of the PS3's and 360's, with almost no sense of individualization or achievement apart from the rather meager Mii channel. There has to be a way to unlock the need for that crazy 12 digit number. Because I'm definitely going to buy this game for my Wii. Please Ninty, let me demolish my unknown and random competition with my amazing guitar skills. Apart from rocking out with my jock out, what harm can that possibly have on the Wii-owning community?
The PS2 refuses to die, at least in the world of RPGs. For that, be thankful, because after the release of Persona 3 and this upcoming SRPG from Nippon Ichi, Soul Nomad & The World Eaters, you should know that these games are nothing to scoff at. Games for the hardcore gamer, the kind of game that takes a genre to it's ultimate nerdy potential, these are the kind of games that come out at the end of a console's lifespan. Maybe it's because there is no more pressure to make the game an across-the-board success that appeals to all types of gamers, these games appeal to one solid demographic. Soul Nomad looks like one of those games. This is the kind of SRPG that requires an awful lot of menu traveling, with stat and item management being just as important as the storyline progression. It has the look of a Nippon Ichi game, so think of Soul Nomad as a more complex Disgaea with a less self-aware aesthetic and a tad more action and excitement. You might be wondering right about now what the hell I'm talking about... well, see for yourself. Not only are there english screenshots and game art to look at, but movies as well. That should clear things up. My only complaint is the font used in the menus, which although clear and simple, kind of makes me feel like an old biddy in a track suit, reading one of those embarrassingly gigantic "large print" books.
Professor Layton is back in a second installment and a subtitle that I can't even begin to decipher, which is rather insulting, considering we haven't even had the original translated yet. It's just as beautifully animated (maybe even more so) with that unique European feel only the Japanese can create. Although there isn't much to see here in regards to gameplay, but there is plenty of storyline. A grand green train seems to play a large part in the story, as well as some new characters. A large-eyed and sensitive looking girl seems to join the heroes, and a debonair blond nobleman seems to be the main villain. And I might be making another translative jump in the dark here, but the end of the trailer seems to have some katakana about a vampire after he evilly yells out Layton's name. What's more excited than a mystery with a pretty boy vampire? Nothing. Come on Level 5, let us play these great games!...

It's only a matter of time, when it comes to handheld platforms, that someone makes a game that forces you to use it in a way that hasn't been done before. Frankly, this isn't always successful, but it can have some interesting results. For instance, it was definitely annoying but surprisingly innovative when Kojima forced you to go out in the sun for Boktai. And we all know what game uses the DS in a vertical stance. In fact, most of this kind of thing has been relegated to the DS, until now. Anata wo Yurusanai (which roughly means "I won't forgive you") has a female detective as a main character, and shockingly, the music is by none other than Nobuo Uematsu! Created by AQ Interactive and due out in Japan in November, you can use the analog stick to hide behind walls as you tail your suspects. Quietly, I'm sure.

Ok, ok, I know that this is supposed to only be manga or anime that I am obsessed with but this week I'm going to do something a little different. Special things require breaking the rules a little. You see, I can't stop playing Persona 3, which is a problem considering I have absolutely no free time. It's the kind of game that you think about all the time. It seeps into your psyche. Even after you force yourself to put it down you're thinking about what and how you will do the next step. It's genius.

For my full review, follow the jump!

Let me start out by saying that this is one of those games that hits you slowly. I'll admit, after the first couple hours of playing P3, despite the very cool opening sequence, I was a little bored. This game takes place in the world and daily life of a japanese high school student--so if you're sick of that ever popular gaming concept, you might find yourself a little annoyed. As my boyfriend said the other night while I was playing, "That has to be the most japanese game I have ever seen." In a way, he's right. Americans who aren't familiar with japanese culture might be put off by all the "-kuns" and "-sans" and "senpais" in the characters speech and the differences between American and Japanese high schools. School is on Saturdays too, clubs are much more important, and responsibilities are higher. I commend Atlus for keeping the Japanese flavor of the game and not trying to Americanize it at all, because the schedule and world of the game works and relies on this subtly complex system.

That being said, it's possibly one of the most well thought out and rewarding RPG experiences I've had in awhile. Heck, in general.

The game centers around a young transfer student, you, the nameless hero. Yes, this is one of those games where the main character has little or no personality. There's a good reason this time around, though, as Persona 3 let's you define and shape his personality through your actions through his school year.

But this isn't a normal school year. Being a Shin Megami Tensei game, you can be sure it is populated by gods and demons. Every night at midnight, a hidden "Dark Hour" appears in which humans turn into crystallized coffins and shadows come out to wreak havoc. Those humans that don't turn into coffins either quickly become prey to shadows or must learn to fight with a powerful demonic alter-ego, a Persona. And it's summoned by blowing your brains out. The home of the shadows, a dark tower called Tartarus, just so happens to be in the exact same location as the place you spend your days, Gekkoukan High School.

Here's where it gets interesting. Every day is broken down into portions: Morning, Daytime, Lunchtime, Afternoon, After School, Evening, you get the idea. And in each of those portions of time, you have to choose what to do. Do you increase your charm by spending your afternoon drinking coffee in the local cafe? Or do you further a relationship with that kid in your class who's got a crush on an older woman? And every choice has it's consequence. If you spend all night with your friends leveling up in Tartarus, you'll get tired. And if you spend the next night studying instead of getting that extra sleep you missed, you'll get sick.

The same goes with fusing your Personas. You can combine 2 or more to create a stronger persona, but do you want to say goodbye to the ones lost by making it? Especially when certain combinations of Personas open up special attacks, this can be a difficult choice to make. To make Persona fusions even more complicated, all those relationships you make during the day have effects on those fusions as well. Every character and Persona has an associated tarot card--for example, if you further your relationship with the character associated with the "Hermit" card, your Personas under the "Hermit" class will get that much stronger.

I know it all sounds pretty overwhelming, but it's put together in a way that keeps it fun without being daunting. Your characters get tired fighting in Tartarus at about the same pace as you would get bored with it, so it's a good excuse to go to bed. Choosing a certain path over another, while often hard for someone as OCD as myself, is rewarding enough that you don't regret your choice. And the characters are really lovely. Even though they can be slightly cliched, they're full of life with great voice acting, evocatively animated cutscenes, and lots of development. I'm a little biased, but all the boys are particularly cute. While the system of the game kind of tricks you into doing it, seeing these relationships develop quickly becomes the most rewarding experience of the game.

For that reason, some people have described the game as "dating sim" but I think that does it a disservice. While a dating sim revolves around a solid goal of "getting the girl," Persona 3 is about all kinds of relationships. Classmates, teammates, the old folks that run a bookstore, a lonely girl who sits at a playground every afternoon, they all play their part. And as you help them, they help you grow as a person. Which makes you a stronger fighter. It's all so seamlessly interwoven that you can't bring yourself to stop--there's always another goal waiting just around the corner. It also doesn't hurt that it's packaged in a such a clean and stylish interface.

If I have any complaints, they're minor. The R&B/rappy music, while interesting and a welcome change from the usual game music, can grate on your nerves after the 15th hour or so, and menus take awhile to load. In fact, there's a lot of time spent waiting for things to load, but it's not so bad that it detracts from the game's fun. Atlus packaged the game with it's usual panache of extras: the box set includes a stunning 50+ page book of the game's art as well the original sountrack on CD.

I kind of want to say this is the Japanese Grand Theft Auto. Which means that it is a true RPG in the sense that the focus is on stat building with a heavy focus on storyline and character development, and you can create your character as you wish, although within the parameters of the game. Instead of going around busting caps in hookers and juicing your pecs, your working on your academic strength and fighting shadow demons with your sword skills and a magical alter-ego. On the surface they seem so different, but they follow the same idea that makes games so great to begin with--the player has the power to do it as he wishes. This sense of cause and effect, rewards from hard work, and the pleasure of seeing a full world develop in front of you that you can change through your actions in the way that you see fit... that's what brings us back to games time and time again. It's an experience that you can't replicate in any other setting, and when it's done right, it's something you'll never forget.

Persona 3 is one of those games. If you give it a chance it will have it's proverbial shot in your temple, and will make you question everything you thought you knew about what makes a game special. My vote for game of the year.

For those of you who are excited about the November releasing 4th game in the Dragon Quest Monsters series, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, I bring you good tidings. Square-Enix has announced that there will be a special bonus package that will be given to those who preorder the game. Like all the bonuses that came with Dragon Quest VIII, Square-Enix seems to want to ensure that it keeps, pleases, and maybe even captures new fans to the less popular but wonderful other big RPG series. The bonus will include a DS charm (one can only assume this will be in the form of a slime), keychain (metal slime, anyone?) and map that will double as a screen cleaner. For me, the final item is reason enough. How awesome is a little cloth map that is made of that awesomely soft screen/lens cleaning material? Anyway, the preorder applies only to those who do it through Amazon, Gamestop, and Game Crazy, so make sure you do it in the right place. In fact, the preorder is such new news, that if you call one of these stores they might not even know what you're talking about. Never fear! Square-Enix has guaranteed the items. Hop to it!
So I kind of made fun of Disgaea 3 when I first heard about it. Sure, it's a Disgaea game, so it can't be bad, but it was announced for the PS3 and it still kind of looked... the same. Call me a jerk, but I expect some level of graphical improvement when switching a series over to a new console. And then I saw these amazing japanese scans. And now it all makes sense. The super and combo attacks look much more impressive, the characters are a real treat to behold, and the world is more detailed. Sure, it's not Bioshock graphics, but it's keeping with the Disgaea look and tradition, which is probably the more important decision. I just love the characters. Main character Mao (*cough* Tse Tung *cough*) looks like the nerdy love child of Laharl and Flonne. Professor Jiya has hilarious facial hair and looks like trouble. Rasp Beryl is a cute kiddie version of Etna with a fondness for the skull motif, and Almaz is sporting the ever popular Laharl like clothing item, the exorbitantly large red scarf. I'm already in love with these characters and I haven't even heard them speak. Just look at the scans and see for yourself! Just try to tell me you aren't chomping at the bit to play this one.

Underworld kookiness, schoolterm highjinks, and adorably mischievous demonkids throwing each other around in full SRPG madness... Score ten points for the PS3!

SCE and Japan Studio have joined dark forces to make this, yet another RPG for the PSP. I know, I know... you're sick of RPGs coming out on the PSP and want more announcements for the newer consoles! Oh wait, that's just that nagging voice in my head, because unlike an awful lot of people, I don't own a PSP. Still, this September release looks pretty promising, and it will be a good thing if they localize it for us. The online description of Rezel Cross describes it as an "action RPG" but what you can see in the video looks pretty turn-based to me. I like the character design, even if it is a little predictable. Steam punk meets FFVIII meets Arabian Knights? Of particular interest is the blonde Marion, whom looks remarkably like a lesbian I know, and the warrior Zesu, if only because he has ridiculous abs under a skin tight unitard and seems to be wearing a kilt. Playing with camera angle will be imperative. Graphics are impressive, great character and monster design, music is solid, storyline seems decent... what's not to love? Anyone know what a "Rezel" is?...

It's good to know that even though the Playstation3 is the home of games that are so amazing and advanced that almost none of them are even close to being complete, there will still be that standby of videogames--the Japanese style mecha RPG. Megazone 23: Blue Garland almost seems like it could be a PS2 game, with it's quick-blinking character shots, fairly basic CG and static backgrounds, but that's what I find intriguing. How will companies who specialize in the kind of games that aren't graphics and effects beasts use the capabilities of the PS3? Longer storylines with more in depth character development? Or perhaps just quicker load times and cleaner presentation? It will be interesting to see how this phenomena develops. On the other hand, can someone explain to me how this game even plays? If I were to make a guess based on this trailer, I would say this is a dating sim with a giant fighting mecha involved in some war-like capacity. Something like being good for picking flowers to give to the odd-hair-colored girl of your dreams....

Let's Yoga DS Coming To US?

At the recent Leipzig, Konami really made a surprising move when it showed localized screenshots of Let's Yoga DS. Why? Well, this is the kind of game that I think will only be successful in Japan. It's not that I don't think there are people in the US who like simulation-based gameplay, and use their DS almost religiously. It's just that I don't see the fanbase. Who, pray tell, is going to get this game? I don't know any fitness conscious girls (or guys) that are going to use their DS to learn yoga. Really. If they're interested, they're going to sign up for a class. I can hear you all yelling out, "but this is for people who don't want to pay for a class weekly and feel uncomfortable practicing contortions in skimpy outfits in front of total strangers!" I do hear that, but I really still think that is maybe 2.5 people in the US. Americans just aren't likely to be interested in yoga AND gaming. Accuse me of stereotyping, but it's pretty mutually exclusive. Although I personally was in a yoga class for over a year, I can say without a doubt that I did not meet a single person in that class that would even know what a DS was. Then again, it was Leipzig. Maybe this is meant for Europe. Which somehow, makes more sense. By the way, I would totally play as Kasey. Her hair is so cute! Will Konami bring their DS Yoga software outside of Japan?
While this trailer is nowhere near as awe inspiring as the japanese commercial it still gives a pretty good sense of the world and all around polish this game has to offer. A solid story, great graphics, and solid gameplay are all delivered by Level-5 (when do they not give it their all?) for this SRPG that seems to take a huge cue from the strategy RPG that started it all, FFTactics. I particularly like all of the different sword attacks displayed in this trailer that remind me of Agrias' abilities. If you like this type of game and own a PSP, you probably shouldn't let this one go. Then again, setting up a grid on your floor with your friends and making up hit points and abilities might be just as rewarding. Just be sure to invite them to your party before delivering the killing blow....
