Starting this upcoming Tuesday in the comics section we will be launching a new weekly feature: Ask-a-Fanboy. What is it? Its all about that special advice that only a fanboy can give. What can I ask? Anything at all. When do I need to get my questions in by? Anytime is good, but I'll cut off submissions for a given week's column by Monday at noon. Why are you torturing me thusly? You deserve it. Who is letting you do this? I snuck into the GG castle behind Fruit Brute when he wasn't looking. Where do I send questions? To the Boy Blunder subject: Ask-a-Fanboy What the hell does this have to do with comics? You'll see. So I need lots of questions...on anything. Go on. Get to it. Damn it stop playing with your Wii and start asking questions....

To the <a href="mailto:theboyblunder@gaygamer.net?subject=Ask-a-Fanboy"">Boy Blunder subject: Ask-a-Fanboy

What the hell does this have to do with comics? You'll see.

So I need lots of questions...on anything.

Go on. Get to it.

Damn it stop playing with your Wii and start asking questions.

What Comic Books Taught Me About Hatred

Comics taught me a lot about how to deal with life. In some respects more than classical authors such as: Ovid, Boethius, Plato, Homer and Danielle Steel. I learned how to use misdirection and a spiffy pair of glasses to hide my True Identity™. I learned how to fall properly into radioactive goo so as to not get cancer and only get spiffy powers. I learned that from tragedy, with dedication, perseverance and tight spandex that I can teach my enemies to fear me. Many of you know that our site has been down because of an attack. Which sucks, because I had a lot to write about Quakecon. But it gave me time to reflect on why these things happen and how I am supposed to react to it. The most important lesson I learned from comics though relates to hatred. I learned that any group that is sufficiently different is a target for ignorance. Skin color, sexuality, mutant abilities, whatever the cause, if you are different, you will be hated. You see, gay people tend to love superheroes because we get it. We know what is like to hide your True Identity™. The need to blend in, the protection of banality. But it is a lie. We are different, and we're hated because of it. I also learned, largely due to Stan Lee, that the responsibility for dealing with hatred directed at me is in my hands. I could rant and rage and take matters into my own hands, like Magneto. In truth that probably could accomplish some good. Or, I could choose to be like Charles Xavier and the X-Men. I could choose to love and defend those people that hate me. This really isn't altruism, in my opinion, it is about what I allow to consume me. I choose love over hatred. I have no idea if they will catch whomever did this. In many respects I don't care. But I can promise you this, if anyone anywhere hates me for what I am, my response is simple. Let's go have coffee and talk. Explain to me where you're coming from, and I will attempt to do the same. Its okay to disagree, and we'll probably not change each others minds. But I will not react to hatred with more hatred, only love and coffee. You can probably tell I'm the comics nerd here at GayGamer.net. Check out the comics section for my normal snarky fare....

I've been hanging around Quakecon for two days now and finally something interesting happened, well, aside from me handing out deordorant to random smelly gamers. In in combination press conference/keynote address, id CEO Todd Hollingshead and id co-founder John Carmack unveiled the title of their next franchise--RAGE. If you saw the teaser footage from Apple's WWDC, you've actually seen the game, though at the time it was merely pitched as a technology demo. RAGE is a post-apolcalyptic Road Warrior style game, heavy on driving and adventure elements. Utilising id's Tech 5 new engine that enables silmultaneous platform development on OS X, PC, xbox 360 and PS3, Carmack promises a significantly less dark game, with "sunny outside environments" but with id's special little flair we've all come to love. The project is being drivin by id veteran Tim Willits. Already in development for two years, and over 20 million spent already, both Hollingshead and Carmack are very enthusiastic and say it is a radical departure from id's usual business model and a "significant risk" but they both believe strongly in the project. At least two more years of development remain, and the final game will occupy 2 crammed DVDs or one Blu-ray disk. Tech 5 allows for an innovative new way of doing development, with artists able to change surfaces and produce beautiful art with no impact on programmers and no source control needed. Carmack alse revealed that elements of Tech 5 have made its way into Enemy Territory: Quake Wars in the form of mega-textures. ET: Quake Wars now has a release date of October 2, 2007....
